Poverty Reduction Strategy Priority Support Programme
This project is designed to deal with the problems of poor economic growth and the prevalence of HIV/AIDS in Lesotho. Poor economic growth in Lesotho has limited employment opportunities and wealth creation, which has had a detrimental effect on the health of many people, particularly in regard to HIV/AIDS and associated illnesses. This in turn, has also had a detrimental effect on the economy reducing the availability of an active and productive workforce; helping to create and sustain an socio-economic spiral of decline.
To stop this decline, the Department for International Development is funding the implementation of the Poverty Reduction Strategy Priority Support Programme, a £3.9 million programme designed to stimulate economic growth by providing support to overcome the country’s economic and health problems. The main aim of the project is to improve co-ordination and support between four inter-related components of the Lesotho economy; Job Creation, Food Security, HIV/AIDs treatment and care and the Justice Sector. By improving co-ordination between these sectors, and in co-ordination with other projects such as Capacity Building for Economic Planning Phase 2, it will enable the necessary economic environment to promote sustained and equitable economic growth.
A substantial and complicated project, Harewelle International is working as the managing agent and is responsible for overall management of the programme. Work includes providing technical assistance; contracting and sub contracting; management of international and domestic staff; donor reporting; monitoring and evaluation; and the design and technical implementation of the project, including the development of an overarching Monitoring and Evaluation framework for the programme; and establishing direct links to the Government of Lesotho’s own poverty monitoring programme.
