Mobile Food Vans - Mojar Khabar - start up in Dhaka City
Mojar Khabar is the brand name of the Mobile Food vans that have begun operating in Dhaka, Bangladesh. These are being funded by UKAid through the InvEst project (Investment for Economic Empowerment of Street-dwellers) of Concern Worldwide in collaboration with the Economic Empowerment of the Poorest programme (EEP)
The InvEst project aims to create a brand of food chain businesses with mobile kitchen outlets run by the street-dwellers to ensure easy access to quality food at affordable prices.
Street-dwellers were mobilised and organised in Business Groups. After intensive training the group members were provided with low-cost manually operated equipped mobile kitchens and working capital in instalments to run their food business. Central kitchens will eventually be supplying semi/pre-cooked food to all the vendors of mobile-kitchens.
Although only two mobile vans (one at the TSC of Dhaka University and another in front of the Motejheel Stadium market), were successfully started in December last year, it is hoped that overall 320 mobile kitchens and 5 central kitchens involving 700 street-dweller households will be put into operation. This is a great way to have instant, fresh, healthy and hygienic food on the streets of Dhaka, Bangladesh.
